The Lord is My Light!

It was so very dark that Wednesday night I ran out of gas in my momma’s old green Chevrolet station wagon.  I had stayed late at church, helping out with the pictorial directory.  Choir rehearsal had finished before the Olan Mills reps and I completed our job.  So, my parents were well on their way home from Leesburg to Albany, GA at least 30 minutes before I left.  My mom worked late that afternoon at the beauty shop and hadn’t noticed the gas gauge was on “empty.”  Well, to be honest, since I didn’t own a car at 16, I hadn’t noticed the gas gauge either.  As the car puttered to a halt, I slowly steered it off the pavement to the right side of the road.  I prayed, “O.K. Lord, what do I do now?”  Then I heard Him speak, not in an audible voice, but to my spirit….”Blow the horn at the next car that drives by.”  At that time, Highway 19, from Leesburg to Albany had very little traffic at 9:00 at night.  However, in less than a minute, a car passed by and I honked the horn.  The brake lights of the car came on as they turned around to head back in my direction.  I prayed, “Lord, I don’t know who these people are, but they must be your servants, so I’ll trust them.”  To this day, I do not know the names of these people.  But, they were the sweetest older couple I had ever met!  I told them my car was out of gas and I needed a ride to Pearl Avenue in Albany.  They smiled and said they would be glad to give me a ride.  When we arrived at my house I thanked them and walked into my house.  I told my parents what happened and they couldn’t believe it!   Psalm 27:1 reminds me of that dark night on Highway 19.  I needed a light and I needed rescuing or saving.  The Lord continues to be my light and my salvation!  Therefore, I don’t need to fear.  The Lord is still the stronghold, a refuge or hiding place, and the strength of my life!  Who should I ever be afraid of?   I have always believed this statement, “The best place to be is the center of God’s will.”  Well, that dark lonely night in the Spring of 1973, I was in God’s will, doing His work and  He provided a sweet older couple to transport me home.  Declare who God is in your life as stated in His Word!   Believe it and live it!!  Then you will have no reason to be afraid in any situation.

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear?

The Lord is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?”  Psalm 27:1
